There is no official support for other desktop environments. While there are a handful of dedicated independent desktop environment maintainers, these days RHEL - and hence CentOS, is a GNOME distro. Several additional repos are needed, often including single person third party repos. While doable, unlike servers CentOS is not a prime candidate for desktop usage. I gave up about three years ago trying to maintain CentOS 7 in VirtualBox.ĭespite the core product being GPL, my unscientific wild ass guess is VirtualBox is a product of Oracle, which is a direct competitor of Red Hat, and the attention paid to supporting VirtualBox is low on the Red Hat developers priority list, who need to push their own virtualization products.
I found CentOS 7 in VirtualBox to be frustratingly slow. Trying to slap CentOS "upside the head" with Full screen mode, Scaled mode, Auto resize guest display, Adjust window size don't seem to succeed. Dynamic Kernel Module Support (DKMS) is supposed to update the kernel module when the kernel is updated, but this seems to fail more often than not. Getting a maximum window size is one of the issues I have seen with CentOS 7 inside VirtualBox.
The reported error message happens when another virtual ISO image is already in the virtual optical disk drive. I haven't tested CentOS 8 but I have no reason to think the results will be different. YMMV, but for me CentOS 7 always has been problematic inside VirtualBox.
